Jeff Kerr, Team Captain for the "Heroes Live Forever" Cycling Team became involved in this event when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in March of 2006.
His introduction to MS was with a total loss of vision in my left eye. He was so scared and concerned about his future. So many questions raced through his head. Will he be able to care for his wife and three daughters? Will this end his law enforcement career? Can this be cured?
Well, the good news is that his neurologist and family doctor really cared. His vision is pretty much back to normal. As time passed, he learned more about the answers to his questions and developed even more questions. His day to day life is pretty normal to the outsider, but MS creates challenges the are only noticed by his family and those who are very close to him. Numbness, tingling in the extremeties and a kind of fatigue that is difficult to describe.
The meds are a whole new story. He was having a really bad reaction to his weekly injection of Avonex so he decided to visit his neurologist. His changed to a daily injection of Copaxone and what a relief that was for him. He was not real excited about sticking himself with a needle everyday but this relatively new drug has made a huge difference in his quality of life. This treatment does not cure MS but rather slows the progression of the disease. He is 17 years into my career as a cop and have 10 more to go. With a lot of faith, medical miracles and the undying support of his family and friends, he WILL make it.
Since its inception in 2006, "Heroes Live Forever" has raised more than $120,000.
Our Team Captain, Jeff Kerr (who is living and working with MS), had the honor of receiving the National MS Society's coveted Platinum Award again this year. Heroes Live Forever team members come from all walks of life to include: law enforcement officers, hospital administrators, laborers, computer techs, teachers, members of the Armed Forces, professional counselors, business owners, doctors, print media reporters, professional photographers, college students, general contractors and retired persons.
